Five Great Reasons To Experience South Africa’s Breath Taking Panorama Route!

You stand at God’s Window and you feel it. Have you died and gone to Heaven? Could this be Heaven on Earth? A sight so spectacular it can’t be of this world – but it is…and it is just one of 5 great reasons to experience South Africa’s breath-taking Panorama Route!

As a traveller to many destinations of the world, you might have heard that South Africa is a ‘world-in-one-country’ and this one day (which is part of a wonderful 5 day luxury safari package to South Africa’s famous Kruger National Park) will prove it.

It is a scenic drive that encompasses some quaint and some spectacular stops, many of which you may never have heard of, but will never forget after this day. The Panorama Route, devised by the highly rated South African guided tour operator, Jewel of Africa, is situated along a beautiful winding road situated on top of the magnificent Drakensberg Mountains – the longest and largest mountain range in South Africa. Its highlights are:

Reason One – God’s Window

This magnificent viewpoint on the edge of the mountain range is difficult to describe. Photos cannot do it justice, as it is more to do with the feeling you experience just being there. Just a small part of a 250km long earthwork of sheer cliffs and extravagant beauty, it’s as though one can see forever!

Reason Two – Berlin Waterfalls and the Lisbon Waterfalls

The Berlin Falls cascade from the centre of a sheer cliff that stands roughly 80m tall. The shape of the falls is likened to a giant candle. The Lisbon Falls are the highest waterfalls in the Mpumalanga province. These Falls get their names from miners who ventured to South Africa from Europe during the gold rush, and named each waterfall in the region after places from their home countries.

Reason Three – The Blyde River Canyon

This is the third largest overall, but largest ‘all green’ canyon in the World! This is heaven for primate spotters as all five of South Africa’s main monkey species can be seen in the Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve. It has some of the deepest precipitous cliffs of any canyon on the planet!

Reason Four – Bourke’s Luck Potholes

This is where the Blyde and Treur Rivers meet and have, through the years, caused extensive erosion, which formed a series of potholes in the sandstone bedrock. This has resulted in a fascinating network of tunnels and tubes, a fascinating place to visit and experience.

Reason Five – Graskop

The Panorama route tour ends with camaraderie and reflection on the day’s stupendous sightings with a visit to a gourmet pancake house, ‘Harries Pancakes’ and a wonder around the delightful little tourist town of Graskop.
