Walvis Bay

Namibia’s principal port town and bay featuring a fishing harbor and natural lagoon with abundant marine mammals and birds.

Namibia’s Bay Of Plenty For Water & Marine Life

Walvis Bay, meaning ``Whale Bay`` in English, is a town in Namibia and the name of the bay on which it lies. The bay is a safe haven for sea vessels because of its natural deep-water harbour, protected by the Pelican Point sand spit, being the only natural harbour of any size along the country's coast. Walvis Bay, with its large bay and sand dunes, is an important centre of safari tourism activity in Namibia. Attractions include the artificial Bird Island, centre of a guano collection industry, the Dune 7 sand dune, the salt works, the abundant marine birdlife, and the coastal waters filled with large populations of whales, seals and dolphins.

Walvis Bay Lagoon Plus Seal and Dolphin Tours

The special attraction of Walvis Bay is the huge natural lagoon with its overwhelming abundance of seabirds – with innumerable flamingoes and pelicans among them. Every year they are joined by 200,000 migratory birds. A firm favourite among our guests, a seal and dolphin tour allows you to spend a morning or afternoon touring Walvis Bay’s harbour, see the beautiful isolated lighthouse built in the middle of nowhere, go to the wreck and the oyster farms in the beautiful bay, meander through Pelican Point while spotting birds and sea life – everything from seals and dolphins to whales and turtles –  all while enjoying a decadent picnic on deck with champagne, oysters and more.

Adrenaline and Adventure at Dune 7

Dune 7 stands as the highest sand dune in Namibia’s coastal region on the edge of the Namib Desert. Walk on the sandy ridge and feel the power of gravity in this extremely arid climate as you observe the sea, sand, and salt with no vegetation around. Picnic facilities are also available, and adrenaline activities such as sand boarding (reaching speeds of 60kph/37mph) and quad biking can be booked with local tour operators for this dune site.

Join A 4×4 Dune Birding Safari to Sandwich Harbor

A unique adventure is the 48 km 4×4 drive to Sandwich Harbour, a freshwater lagoon surrounded by dunes, and a favourite amongst anglers and birders. Part of the Namib Naukluft Park, it is a place many have heard of but very few have ever visited. The lagoon, salt pans and the bird sanctuary forming the Walvis Bay Wetlands, are rightly heralded as the single most important coastal wetlands of Southern Africa. It is one of five Ramsar sites in Namibia. Here, giant sand dunes run straight into the ocean, creating breath taking sceneries and unique landscapes, just waiting to be discovered.
