Caprivi Strip

Northern Namibia’s most secret safari destination situated in the most wildlife rich area of Southern Africa.

Namibia’s Unspoiled & Wildlife-Rich Safari Heartland

Situated in north-east Namibia, is the Caprivi Strip, or officially called the Zambezi Region since 2013. It lies between Angola and Botswana and stretches to the borders of Zambia and Zimbabwe. It is surrounded and crossed by wide rivers, which means lush green floodplains, herds of wildlife and ancient baobabs. The region supports a greater number of people than anywhere else in Namibia, with villages, grazing cattle and roadside stalls visible everywhere. Rundu is the western gateway to the Caprivi, but the main hub of the Caprivi Strip is the town of Katima Mulilo, with its own airport. The Caprivi is a worthwhile addition to any luxury African safari with its national parks a true haven for Africa’s iconic wildlife. It also offers easy access to sought-after Africa safari destinations like the Okavango Delta and Chobe National Park in Botswana and Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe.

Four Rivers and Four National Parks

The lush, tropical Caprivi Strip is surrounded and crossed by four rivers, including the Zambezi, Kavango, Chobe and Linyanti River. The Caprivi Strip also boasts with four national parks or game reserves. Mahangu Game Reserve borders the Okavango River and Botswana, with diverse scenery and wildlife combining lush riverine forest, Okavango floodplains and dry Kalahari bushveld. Bwabwata National Park (formerly known as the Caprivi Game Park), stretches from the Okavango River to the Kwando River. Wildlife moves freely between this Park and Botswana, with clear water, lush islands and the Popa Falls some of the highlights. Mudumu National Park is situated deep in the Caprivi, alongside the waterways of the Kwando River. Mamili National Park is very secluded and is situated where the Kwando River turns into the Linyanti, later forming the Chobe River.

Easy Access to Other Regional Destinations

Namibia’s Caprivi Strip lies sandwiched between the African countries of Angola, Zambia and Botswana, and is situated within easy reach of other highly acclaimed regional safari destinations like the Chobe National Park, Okavango Delta and Victoria Falls. The borders can be crossed by road.

One of The Most Wildlife Rich Areas in Southern Africa

Wildlife in the Caprivi Strip varies greatly, and the border with Botswana is not fenced, meaning seasonal movement of animals between the Caprivi and Botswana’s wilderness areas. Here you can see large herds of elephant and buffalo, some of Africa’s top predators like lion, leopard and wild dog and a variety of antelope including lechwe, tsessebe, sitatunga and waterbuck. The Caprivi Strip offers a handful of excellent luxury lodges, situated on the waterways which offers a varied safari experience. Safari activities on offer here include game drives, bush walks and sundowners on floating pontoons. Game viewing can also be enjoyed by canoe or houseboat. The Caprivi Strip is also a premier birding destination with more than 500 species recorded here, including regional rarities and raptors.
