The most iconic Big 5 safari destination in South Africa
The world-renowned Kruger National Park is the largest game reserve in South Africa and is truly a must-visit Africa safari destination, offering one of the best wildlife experiences in Africa. This 2-million-hectare wildlife sanctuary is like no other, offering magical unpredictability and endless wilderness that is the true quality of Africa. This is a land of baobabs, fever trees, knob thorns, marula and mopane trees underneath which lurk the Big Five, and more species of mammals and birds than in any other African game reserve. The Park can be accessed by road and air and the Park’s large road network is easily traversed on a self-drive or privately guided safari. The Park also offers guests a range of accommodation options, including luxury safari lodges.
South Africa’s largest sanctuary for Africa’s iconic wildlife and birdlife
Proclaimed in 1926, Kruger National Park is South Africa’s largest game reserve, extending 360 km (220 miles) from north to south and 65 km (40 miles) from east to west. Regarded as one of the largest national parks in the world, all of the Big Five are found in the Kruger National Park but it also boasts more species of large mammals than any other African game reserve. Iconic African wildlife species that can be seen here include lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino, as well as the endangered African wild dog and cheetah. Antelope species like giraffe, zebra, impala and wildebeest are also very common here. Keen birders can sight up to 517 species here, including resident and migrant species.
A variety of quality accommodation options for the discerning safari traveler
The Kruger National Park contains twelve main rest camps, as well as several smaller camps scattered throughout the park. The largest rest camp, which also serves as the headquarters for Kruger, is Skukuza Camp. Safari accommodation options range from tents to large guesthouses, with most units built in the iconic thatched style. All the main rest camps offer at least a shop and restaurant for both self-catering and non-self-catering guests. Within the Park there are also several private concessions with private luxury lodges, offering all-inclusive luxury accommodation.
Perfectly located for an all-round safari experience
The Kruger National Park is perfectly located to offer guests an all-round safari experience. Besides for game-drives, night-drives and bush walks on offer in the Park, the regions outside the Park offers a range of other scenic, cultural and adventure activities, which can be enjoyed during your safari stay. Some of the highlights in the greater Kruger area include exploring the Panorama Route, Blyde River cruises, visiting a wildlife rehabilitation center, interacting with elephants, experiencing cultural dancing and dining and booking a helicopter flight. For the more active, there are hiking, mountain biking and horse trails which brings you closer to nature in a unique way.
