Franschhoek, the gourmet food capital of South Africa

The town of Franschhoek is situated against a backdrop of orchards, vineyards and mountains, and is definitely one of the most beautiful towns in the Cape Winelands. As you enter Franschhoek you will notice that most of the farms still bear their original French names, some complete with a spectacular Cape Dutch homestead, towering oaks and rolling vineyards. Franschhoek has become known as South Africa’s culinary capital, providing visitors with a memorable dining experience. The town’s main street is filled with art galleries, boutique shops and top restaurants. The Franschhoek Valley offers an array of cellars, ranging from quaint boutique wineries to the large cellars that offer visitors organized tours and tastings. The fertile Franschhoek Wine Valley is home to some of South Africa’s noble cultivars and classic styles including some of the country’s extraordinary Method Cap Classique, which can all be enjoyed during a trip along the Franschhoek MCC Route.

Stellenbosch, a grand old town shaded by ancient oak trees

The town of Stellenbosch is the second oldest settlement in South Africa after Cape Town. It is surrounded by the vineyards of the Cape Winelands and the mountainous nature reserves of Jonkershoek and Simonsberg. The Stellenbosch Wine Route offers a staggering 200 wine estates in the immediate area, many which are open to the public and have daily wine tours and tastings, not to mention restaurants with vineyard views or picnic baskets to be enjoyed on their expansive lawns. The town itself is the perfect place to walk around on foot and you can do a little shopping before enjoying a decadent meal in the shade of its famous 300-year-old oak trees. Make sure to head for Dorp Street, the historic heart of the town and a national monument, thanks to its grand display of old Cape Dutch, Georgian and Victorian buildings. The renowned Stellenbosch University also adds a lively atmosphere to the town with its students filling the many bars and sidewalk cafés.
