Central Kalahari Game Reserve

When visiting the Central Kalahari Game Reserve during your luxury African safari, you can expect to experience unique, magnificent and remote Botswana landscapes. The reserve is so vast and remote, that you will be surprised to find other travelers here. Expect both endless shimmering pans and golden grasslands stretching from one horizon to the other, with a variety of desert-adapted trees standing tall in grand isolation. The grasslands appear to stretch endlessly to the horizon and at the end of each day the red and purple hues of the sunset make for exceptionally scenic landscape photography. After dark, the clear night sky lights up with such a brilliance of stars that is difficult to find anywhere else.

The sheer size of the Kalahari makes spotting wildlife tricky, but each sighting is much more private and exclusive as you will probably be the only vehicle around. During the rainy, green season (Dec – April) many species tend to concentrate in the northern part of the park, near Deception Valley. Predators that can be spotted here include the famous black-maned lions which can only be found in this region as well as cheetah and brown hyaena. Adapting easily to the desert habitat, suricates (meerkat), jackals, honey badgers, bat-eared foxes and the African wild cat can also be spotted. Springbok and oryx are the most numerous of the large herbivores found here, together with red hartebeest, eland, wildebeest, zebra, kudu and giraffe.

During your safari the unique wildlife sightings will be complimented by interesting cultural interactions and walks with the local San bushmen, the oldest living inhabitants of Africa. Their local knowledge of this ancient land is shared with you so that you learn more of the veld as their local provider of food, medicine and shelter. As the sun fades and a fire is lit, the sounds of their singing will fill the air and the animated story of each song tells a tale of life in the Kalahari Desert. At night, spend time gazing at and photographing the brilliant African night sky, which will be the clearest here than anywhere else in Botswana.
