What to expect?
After landing in the capital of Namibia, there are immigration formalities and baggage receipt and you will be welcomed by your Jewel of Africa Safaris tour guide.
We drive from the airport to Windhoek where your guide will give you an orientation tour of Windhoek. Discover a city with a boundless heart and stand amazed to hear all the different cultures speaking Afrikaans with each another.
After our city tour, a short drive will take you to the beautiful River Crossing Lodge, situated on a big wildlife reserve, just outside Windhoek.
Check in and freshen up before an optional afternoon safari. The morning and noon safari drives are enchanting with spectacular views and abundant wildlife. Giraffe, wildebeest, roan, sable, etc. roam these plains, while cheetahs and leopards are occasionally seen here.
An early morning breakfast will be followed by a four-hour drive to Sossusvlei situated in the Namib Desert – the oldest desert in the world!!
This is a land where ultimate beauty awaits you; endless sandy plains and dunes, where life and death lives close together with the wind and fog as main actors.
We stay two nights in this unusual setting. Enjoy a brilliant buffet dinner under a star-studded sky, with an array of food and wine you could only imagine!
A very early morning wake-call, some coffee/tea and rusks, we will explore the Namib desert in an open 4x4 vehicle with your own specially trained guide who will share all his knowledge of the area, fauna and flora and much more with you.
We will try to reach the sand dunes as the sun rises. We will stop at Dune 45, a 300-meter-high sand dune and the most photographed dune in the world. Sossusvlei is a mud pan surrounded by red dunes and runs from north to south thus giving you the perfect opportunity to photograph these dunes as soon as the sun rises. The eastern side lights up while the western side is shade and makes for amazing pictures.
We continue our journey to Deadvlei where we will enjoy breakfast at the foot of one of the highest sand dunes in the area. Strengthened by a delightful breakfast, it’s time to explore the beauty of the sand dunes on foot.
On our way, back to the lodge, we do one more stop at the Sesriem Canyon, located approximately 4.5km from the entrance gate of the Namib-Naukluft National Park. The Tsauchab River has shaped the Canyon over millions of years and it is one of the few places in the area that holds water all year around.
Back at the lodge, you can relax in the afternoon, in the lodge.
After breakfast, we travel northwest to Swakopmund. But first, we head over to the local fuel station to fill up on petrol and to stock up on supplies. Its owner, Moose, bakes mouth-watering Dutch apple pies. They’re too tasty to pass up, so we will make sure to have a piece (or more) during our trip to Swakopmund.
Our travels take us straight through an incredible interesting empty, barren wasteland until we reach the coastal town of Swakop. The landscape has such an unearthly quality and is almost what you would expect to see on the moon.
In the afternoon, we arrive in Swakopmund - mouth of the Swakop river. This elegant, charming and friendly city with its broad avenues was founded by German settlers - a little piece of Hamburg at the edge of the desert.
Spend the rest of the evening at leisure to explore this Jewel of the Desert and go for dinner of one of the many excellent restaurants that this beautiful town has to offer.
Today you will be part of one of the most spectacular experiences on this whole tour. Tommy’s Living Desert Tour makes for a jaw-dropping excursion. He will show you a barren piece of desert right in front of you. You will not see 1 living creature, but to your amazement, Tommy will dig out over 25 species of geckos, spiders, snakes, chameleons, legless lizards and many more.
Tommy will show us how plants and small animals survive the unforgiving desert climate, and how they attain water for life. He will also explain the reason for the variety of dune colors and at the end of the tour, you will experience a 'roaring' dune if the weather plays along. This is an experience not to be missed!
The tour starts at 08h00 and will finish by 13h00. The rest of the day is spent at leisure and you will have the opportunity to partake in activities on offer in the area at your own expense.
Depart after breakfast to Walvis Bay harbor for an exciting catamaran trip in the protected lagoon area of Walvis Bay, where the water is calm and abundant with bird life. Experience the thrill of dolphins leaping out of the water alongside the boat, seals that board the boat, fresh oysters and cold champagne on the calm waters of the Walvis Bay lagoon.
This tour is very popular with visitors to the coast, as it shows them an important nesting area for shorebirds that the average visitor doesn’t have access to.
We leave Swakopmund behind and head north along the coast to the fishing village of Hentiesbaai from where the road turns in-land towards Twyfelfontein Country Lodge where we will spend the night.
After breakfast we visit one of Namibia’s most prominent collections of Bushman paintings and engravings. There are some 2,500 Bushman engravings, ranging from the lion with the kink in its tail, the giant giraffe, the fable animal, the works at the ‘place of ceremonies’ and many more.
Time will also be devoted to the Burnt Mountain and the adjacent archaeological phenomenon of the Organ Pipes will be a highlight of the day. The Organ Pipes south of Twyfelfontein are the remains of molten rock pushing up through the Earth’s surface. The similarity of these vertical basalt slabs to organ pipes is obvious. The straight lines and geometrical shapes are absolutely fascinating.
From here we make our way to Vreugde Guest Farm in the South of Etosha National Park. We check in at around lunch time and relax before your first sunset safari in open 4x4 inside Etosha National Park.
Etosha National Park where you will enjoy your first safari in Etosha with your guide.
Etosha National Park covers an area of 22 207 square kilometers. A massive mineral pan dominates Etosha and forms part of the Kalahari Basin, formed about 1000 million years ago. The rains occasionally flood the pans, which attracts thousands of birds including remarkable flocks of flamingos, while the perennial springs along the edges of the Etosha Pan draw large concentrations of wildlife and birds.
The Park is world renowned for its spectacular wildlife: elephant, black and white rhinoceros, lions, leopards, cheetahs, large herds of springbok, zebra, wildebeest, giraffe and a multitude of other fascinating species, big and small, interacting in their natural environment.
We return in the late afternoon where there will be enough time to freshen up before dinner is served.
Embark on an early morning safari with your guide and explore this beautiful landscape in search of lion, elephant, cheetah, leopard as well as a variety of bird life found in the area.
We return to Vreugde Guest Farm after lunch where you can relax and enjoy the surrounding area. Activities include hiking, swimming, birdwatching and many more.
As the sun goes down, enjoy a drink and typical Namibian hospitality at its best before dinner is served.
We check out after breakfast and enter Etosha National Park again with your guide in private closed vehicle. From here we drive through the park to the western boundary at Namutoni Camp.
The camp is situated next to a waterhole and animals and birds visit this waterhole day and night to quench their thrust in this unforgiving desert area.
People sit here day and night and observe animals and birds visiting the waterhole. This is one of the highlights of Etosha!
After breakfast, we make our way to Windhoek International Airport for your flight back home, remembering all too well the amazing experience you had the last 14 days!
You may leave Africa,
but Africa will never leave you!
