Botswana's remote parks and reserves have a rich variety of animal life that are experienced by relatively few lucky people. Botswana is a peaceful country in southern Africa that is surrounded by land and shares its borders with South Africa in the south and east, Namibia in the north and west, Zimbabwe in the northeast and Zambia in the north.

Since independence in 1966, Botswana has become increasingly prosperous and the country has a good network of roads. Botswana remains one of the jewels of Africa. The country combines an impressive wilderness experience with the benefits of many modern-day facilities. Botswana is a beautiful, unspoiled country.

Botswana may have started as a poor African country, but since the country became independent of the United Kingdom in 1966, it developed into one of Africa's most prosperous countries. This can be attributed to diamond mining activities and cattle farming. Today tourism is one of Botswana's liveliest and flourishing industries.

Some aspects to consider when traveling to Botswana

Did you know that:

Botswana borders no ocean? That there are precious minerals in Botswana like diamonds, gold and platinum? That Botswana’s name was called the “Bechuanaland” before 1966?

In the summer months, temperatures rise to around 35 degrees Celsius and during the winter months around 25 degrees Celsius. Rainfall occurs during the summertime while the winter phase accounts for less than 10 percent of the annual rainfall. The best travel time is from May to September as this avoids the hot summer months with lots of rainfall.

You must have a passport that is valid for at least 6 months after leaving Botswana. Vaccination against yellow fever is needed for Botswana only if you visited a yellow fever country in the seven days before you visit Botswana. When eating at a restaurant, tipping of 10% is customary in Botswana as the locals’ wages are very low. The tourism currency is US Dollar but the local currency is the Pula.
